General Description:

Large Swimming bird
Habitat: open waters
Main features: long-bodied, thicker neck than grebes, pointed bill; excellent diver and under-water swimmer; usually submerges quickly for feeding and when alarmed;
Flight Silhouette: hunchbacked body, downward sweep to extended neck, is rarely seen in flight; feet project behind tail
Wings: small and pointed
Nest: ground nest

General Description:
Swimming bird (large and small species)
Habitat: open waters, lakes
Main features: exclusively aquatic, infrequent flyer, excellent diver; appears tailless
submerges quickly for feeding and when alarmed, keeps distance to man
Wings: small and pointed
Nest: floating nest close to embankment

Blackish ear-tufts
Juvenile has black and white striped head and neck, without tufts or frills.
Flight identification: low over the water, shows conspicuous white on secondaries, with head and neck low-hung. Elaborate display ceremonials
Habitat: Lakes, gravel-pit, reservoirs; winter also on coast; breads when vegetation provides anchorage; usually near water's edge.
